Soundman

Made from scrap speakers saved from certain doom, and laser cut ply for the head. This project is very much a work in progress. Originally made as a media centre with onboard power (since the video on left) and audio visual capabilities, Soundman is my ever evolving prototype.

Really, I want to evolve him to be a proper robot. Upgrades to follow are hoverboard motor feet, so he can wheel himself around like a Segway. I am working on a Two Wheel Self Balancing prototype platform (see here) to facilitate this. Once functional, the working parts can be transplanted to Soundman.

With mobility will come a huge avenue of possible upgrade projects, including object avoidance and tracking to facilitate roaming the wider world.

The Build

This is Soundman's story, from the beginning. The early days are all build, and then we'll continue the journey, including his use cases and modifications along the way.

Multimedia robot

First up, collecting enough speakers of the correct size. This was surprisingly easy as I had naturally started hoarding old speakers that would "come in handy at some point".

Pictured is the initial layout for a sense of scale and proportion.

I then embarked on a very 'ad-hoc' build of the legs, using dead reckoning to cut, bend and weld.

Next was the head. This was to be a laser cut plywood construction, designed in Autodesk Inventor.

From a pile of parts, the head starts to take shape.

The arms were also made and added (using the same 'ad-hoc' process).
